Some personal visual inspirations

I vividly remember the first time I saw Super Mario 64. My friend got the Nintendo 64 right when it came out, and I went to his house with some other friends after school to check it out. We spent a good 20 minutes messing with Mario’s face in the title screen and the rest of our time running around the outside of Princess Peach’s castle. My friends were completely floored by the 3D gameplay, and I was completely, utterly disappointed. I just hated it. It looked bad to me: rounded corners were too sharp, the depth was hard to visualize, and Mario just didn’t… look… right. I never understood why all my friends thought Super Mario 64 was basically the coolest thing ever. Perhaps I would forever be a 2D kind of girl.

Well, now I think I know the awe my friends felt that day. I just booted up Style Savvy: Trendsetters for the 3DS. It’s like the first Style Savvy but in three-dee! THREE-DEE, you guys! <3 <3 <3 I was admittedly a little nervous about how the sequel would turn out (some sequels are awesome, some are not), but this is definitely exceeding my expectations so far.

My NES homebrew “glitch-‘n-rhythm” game, TRACK+FEEL II, is now available for free download. It can be played on a standard NES or in an NES emulator. Take a look at the readme to read about configuring the Power Pad controller. Please enjoy! :)

DIY Animal Crossing remixes (no actual effort required)

If you like Animal Crossing music, you might already know about this awesome site by Brian Lee that will play the AC theme associated with the current time on your PC.

Here’s a beautiful discovery I made this afternoon: open the site in one browser tab, wait a bit, then open the site in a second tab. Instant AC remixes! The songs are sparse enough that the layered effect sounds interesting and not too densely populated with notes. (If the results sound cacophonous after 10 seconds of listening, refresh one of the tabs or drag one of the progress bars to a new spot.) When you get the two tracks just the right “distance” apart, they sound great together! This has been my programming soundtrack for the afternoon. <3 <3 <3

Coming soon: TRACK+FEEL II is a cooperative, interactive, glitch-art installation for play on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The software is controlled through a standard Nintendo controller and a Nintendo Power Pad mat controller. Two players must work together to discover the rules of the “game” as well as its goal. Some players may wish to minimize visual or aural disorder, while others may wish to maximize it. TRACK+FEEL II aims to present glitches and generative chaos as tools of construction rather than destruction. TRACK+FEEL II will have some public showings in the coming months and will also be released as a ROM available for download this summer.
